Maui Snorkel Tours Faqs: 15 Questions Answered (video)

Planning Maui snorkel tours? Whether it’s your first time snorkeling or you’re deciding between the early boat and sleeping in, these are the 15 questions everyone asks — answered. Here’s everything you need to know before you book.

TL;DR: Maui Snorkel Tours in 5 Key Points

  1. Small groups, close to Molokini: Just 19 passengers max on a 40-foot raft departing from the Kihei Boat Ramp — about 15–20 minutes to the crater.
  2. World-famous snorkeling: A crescent-shaped volcanic crater and protected marine sanctuary with 100–150+ feet of visibility and 250+ marine life species.
  3. Three tours to choose from: A 2-hour Molokini tour, a 3-hour Molokini + Turtle Town tour, and a seasonal Molokini Crater + Whale Watching tour.
  4. Easy for beginners: No experience needed — the crew fits your gear and flotation devices are available. Just bring a swimsuit, towel, reef-safe sunscreen, and a camera.
  5. Skip the 6 AM wake-up: The 2-hour tour departs at 10:30 AM, so you can sleep in and still snorkel the crater.

Why is Molokini a world-famous snorkel spot?

Molokini is a crescent-shaped volcanic crater, a protected marine sanctuary, and a state seabird sanctuary. Its crescent form shelters the bay from wind and waves, keeping the water calm and clear — and you can only get there by boat. More than 250 fish species call it home, and the water stays warm year-round.

What marine life might we see?

Molokini Crater and Turtle Town are home to more than 250 marine life species — parrotfish, reef triggerfish, butterflyfish, and more. You might spot spinner dolphins on the ride to and from the crater, and turtles, rays, octopuses, and eels on occasion. Turtle Town has a lot more turtles, with a very high sighting rate. In whale season, you might also spot humpback whales — and on a rare occasion, monk seals and whale sharks.

How long does it take to get to Molokini?

About 15 to 20 minutes on our 40-foot raft with twin 250-horsepower Honda engines. The big catamarans out of Ma’alaea can take twice as long — and less travel time means more snorkel time.

How many people are on the boat?

Nineteen passengers, max. We run a small-group raft — nothing like the 50- to 100-passenger catamarans. More space, more personal attention from the crew, and no crowds in the water.

Why do you depart from Kihei instead of Ma’alaea Harbor?

The Kihei Boat Ramp is the closest departure point to Molokini Crater. You skip the drive across the island — and you’re in the water faster.

Where do we check in and depart from?

We depart from the Kihei Boat Ramp — look for the Makena Mele II, our gray-and-red 40-foot raft. The two-hour Molokini tour checks in at 10 AM and departs at 10:30 sharp. The three-hour Molokini plus Turtle Town tour checks in at 6:30 AM and departs at 7 sharp. In whale season, our Molokini Crater plus Whale Watching Tour checks in at 10 AM and departs at 10:30 sharp.

I’ve never snorkeled before. Will I be okay?

Absolutely. On the way out, the crew fits and adjusts your gear, and flotation devices are available if you want extra comfort.

What are the age and physical restrictions?

Snorkelers need to be 5 or older, and minors under 15 must be accompanied by an adult. You should be able to handle moderate-to-advanced physical activity, climb a vertical boat ladder, and walk down the dock unassisted. The weight limit is 300 pounds. No pregnant women, and no chronic back conditions. Non-swimmers are welcome to stay on the boat.

How clear is the water at Molokini and Turtle Town?

Visibility at Molokini often reaches 100 to 150 feet or more — some of the clearest water in Hawaii. At Turtle Town, visibility typically ranges between 60 and 100 feet.

What’s included in the tour price?

Premium snorkel gear, sandwiches with a vegetarian option, chips, granola bars, Hawaiian-made juices, bottled water, and beverages. Plus, every booking comes with a free 16-species fish ID card.

What should I bring?

Your swimsuit, a light jacket or shawl, reef-safe sunscreen, a towel, your camera, and gratuities for the crew.

Can I bring my own snorkel gear or underwater camera?

Cameras are welcome — bring yours. You can bring your own gear too, but full-face snorkel masks are banned for safety.

Is there a tour that lets you skip the 6 AM wake-up?

Yes — our two-hour Molokini tour. It departs at 10:30 in the morning, so sleep in, have breakfast, and still snorkel the crater.

What is your cancellation policy?

For a full refund, cancel at least 24 hours before departure for groups of up to four, 48 hours for groups of five or more, and seven days ahead for private charters. Cancellations for weather or mechanical issues are always honored. See the full cancellation policy for details.

Why book with Makena Coast Charters?

Our boat has a fully shaded deck and deluxe cushion seating for all passengers, unlike other raft boats that have some guests sit on the pontoon. We provide premium snorkel gear, and we have over 4,000 five-star reviews to back it up.
