Molokini’s Mid-Reef is in the center of the crater, while Reef’s End and Enenu’i are on opposite points of the crescent.
The depths range from 30-80 feet over a beautiful carpet of coral. Multitudes of fish and eels dart in and out of the crevices and holes, treating snorkelers to a rainbow of colors.
At the edge of Mid-Reef, an abundance of marine life is set against the brilliant turquoise waters of the open ocean, creating one of Molokini Crater’s most beautiful underwater views. The contrast between the shallow reef, sandy channels, and deep blue water beyond makes this area especially scenic for snorkelers.
This location may serve as the finishing point of a snorkel through Reef’s End, after passing the garden eels that live in the sandy channel between the two sites. Along the way, guests may see schools of colorful tropical fish, moray eels hiding within the reef, whitetip reef sharks resting near the bottom, and occasionally a manta ray passing through the area.
Marine life sightings vary from day to day, but the clear water, vibrant reef, and open-ocean backdrop make Mid-Reef a memorable snorkeling location.
A lone, rare, and endangered Hawksbill Turtle occasionally takes up residency here, as does an endangered Monk Seal from time to time; neither is at all shy about saying hello to snorkelers.
Even some dolphins, a random Whale Shark, or the seasonal Humpback Whales may grace us with their presence on a dive at Molokini Mid Reef.
All snorkeling sites are weather-conditions permitting.
Along with Reef’s End, Enenu’i, and Back Wall, Mid-Reef is a gorgeous coral garden destination situated in the center of Molokini. Known as “The Aquarium,” this area of the crater is full of tropical Hawaiian fish – such as: Giant trevally, pyramid butterfly fish, unicornfish, trumpet fish, garden eels, and crocodile needlefish. Based on past excursions, a lone, rare and endangered Hawksbill Turtle occasionally takes up residency here, as does an endangered Monk Seal from time to time; neither creature is too shy and often says hello to fellow swimmers. Even dolphins, Whale Sharks, or seasonal Humpback Whales may grace us with their presence here.
